ECU Advice pls
Hi again, I have read many posts now and have come to the conclusion that your car needs to be modified in order for a chip to be worth it.(By the majority of posts)
I am quite a novice at this, so any advice would be greatly appreciated
My civic is a '98 160i SOHC (non - vtec) 5spd manual.
Stock standard - except for a K&N air filter. The car hasn't been dyno'd since.
I do not know anything about odb1... and vafc? etc?.
The product I am thinking of installing is the following:
http://www.stevesautoclinic.co.za/Un...nversions.html
Please have a look at it and give me some advice.
They quote me R2400 ($370) for the complete setup and dyno etc.
I am not thinking of tuning my car further - maybe branches and a freeflow in the unforseeable future.but thats it. Will it be worth it, or should I just go with the dyno tune?

I am only going to say no to that crap, there is no such thing as a "uni-chip" or whatever. Tuning involves being able to well.....tune and a unprogramable chip that allows no fine tuning to adjust things for a certain car and it's mods(all cars are different requiring different tunes even if it is the same engine with the same setups) is not a good way to go
According to Steves Auto Clinic (a very respectable tuning firm in SA) the "Unichip" is a fully functional Piggyback Computer that is wired into the existing Electronic Control Unit harness and allows new information to be stored.

FOLLOWING IS TAKEN FROM THEIR SITE:
"Once the new unit is in place, it can be programmed to suit any specific need, for instance if a change was made to the engine one could calibrate the entire control unit to match the engine.
A good example of "tuning to suit specific needs" is the ability to tune any vehicle to achieve the best possible fuel consumption while driving with light throttle and being able to obtain maximum air performance under full throttle conditions, where fuel consumption should not be an issue.
We are also able to control idling, drive additional injectors, take full control over timing functions and remove road speed governors.
This new technology is far superior to the conventional "Chip" which is available all over simply because your own vehicle is individually optimised.
The "Chip" is made in someone else's vehicle somewhere else in another country.
There are many safety functions built into a standard electronic control unit, which remain completely unaltered.
We only change the areas in the rev range or at specific throttle positions, which need to be altered.
In short, we are able to optimise your vehicle 100%. "

They say there are 408 fuel and timing parameters they can alter at 12 throttle positions for maximum optimization.
So the way I understand it is, a tuning technition is sitting in your car, whilst the car is on the dyno, programming your air/fuel mixture, timing ect through the "unichip" that is piggy backed onto your existing ecu.
So then your car is individually tuned.Theyself say that no 2 cars are identical and I believe it to.
thanks for any advice, I will be more carefull before buying anything.

I also think that unichip is a waste of money, and anyways thats damn expensive. Check this link out:

Anyone out of South Africa more knowledgeable than i am about these things please let me know what you guys think about this product. I know some one who uses this ECU and has no problems, considering getting one myself.
