Default gulping gas

I have a 93 hatch back with a h22a swap. I might be getting like 25 miles to the gallon. I don't think it should be sucking down the gas like this. I can also smell the gas really bad when I'm at a stop sign or red light. Do I have a problem or does the h22a suck the gas like this?

Thanks

h22's get like 28mpg or something like that. You're probably running rich if you smell gas real bad. Either that or a fuel line leak... Both would obviously cause poor gas mileage.

Yeah, sounds like your engine is running rich. Is the CEL ON?

Check for an exhaust leak around the primary O2 sensor, a stuck open PCV valve or leaking PCV hose, or a faulty primary O2 sensor.

I'm not sure what the CEL is so I don't know if it is on or not.

It's a light on your gauge cluster with a picture of an engine. It turns on when you first start the car to test the bulb, and then shuts off.

Information at the link below suggests that checking your engine timing with a timing gun would also be a good idea:

I checked the cel#. It was the vss- speed sensor. I'm not sure where that is or what to do about it.

Thanks
