Default smelling gas under the car what could it be..

I'm not sure if this is the right thread to post this question but if it isn't my bad. Is it unusual to smell gas under the car when you turn on your engine? I've check under the car and under the hood no leaks anywhere. I also check to see if any smell is coming from the exhaust nothing. What is your take on this? I have a smog check coming soon would this affect my car not to pass?

possibly a bad seal at the fuel pump cover? so fumes are getting out when the system is initialy pressurized? total shot in the dark..

do you like to round up to the next dollar when you fill up for gas after the car is full?

that might be a big part of your problem

If you over fill your gas tank, you could end up pumping fuel into the the charcoal canister and break it. This would cause the smell of fuel vapor. This is just one of many things that cause a smell of fuel. What year is your car? Does it have a check engine light?

If it was leaking then you should be able to see a puddle under the car. If you have a garage, park it in thier and have it idle in there for a little bit. If you don't, try to narrow down the area where you think the leak might be then put a pan under that spot.

there is no leaking anywhere nor i pump it u p to the dollar mark. I went to get my smog checked today and it was close to being failed, I barely passed. here are my chart results: the max (ppm) for 15 mph is 716 my car measure 710 ppm. He said that my catalytic converter could be the cause..if you look under the Co data its pretty high. Im assuming that why my fuel smell when i start my car. By the way my car is 95 civic.

if its the cat, it is probably because the holes, that allow the gasses to pass thru the walls of the cat, are getting clogged. that could also give you a smell of gas fumes, when you first start your car. as the cat heats up, it is heating the crud collecting on the wall of the cat.. go high flow, bet it helps
