Engine swaps
i have recently bought a 93' civic ex.I need to do an engine swap cause the stock d16z6 is dead with 215k on it.So i was looking at putting and h22a or a b16a2 in its place. But i am wondering wat the difference is between the 2...?
Am i gonna need to do more work to put in one engine?
What are the difference in prices?
Power.....?

RE: Engine swaps
the H22 is a bit heavier, so it will throw off the handling. the B series have more aftermarket support, but there really isnt a shortage of performance parts for the h either. honestly, the h22 is probably cheaper, which makes it really tempting, but i just never got on board with the h as a big performer. and if handling is important to you, then you will want the B, but if you will sacrifice some understeer for straightline performance, then the h isnt a bad idea. oh, and the h22 is quite a bit more work to install. and a HUGE pain to work on once it is installed.
so the H22=more bolt-in power out of the box. understeer in corners. cheaper initial cost. harder to install.
and the B16=lower power, but still a big improvement over stock, retains most of stock handling. cheaper to upgrade. easier to install.

RE: Engine swaps
i'm a b-series lover, but i'd take a JDM H22a everytime.
it has the better horsepower AND torque, as well as being cheaper.
so it's a little heavier than a regular d-series engine. so is a b-series. big deal. the H22as torque and horsepower advantage more than compensates.
and as far as handling, read line three...

RE: Engine swaps
Its much more than a little heavier, its about double the weight of the d-series, and the b series falls about halfway in between. and the transmissions for the H-series are garbage. If you do end up doing an H22, do an H to B transmission swap kit. then you can at least get a good tranny with some decent gear ratios. H22 is definetely faster for straightline, but to get the car to handle is going to take a lot more chassis/suspension tuning. I cant argue cost though. even with the H2B kit, you'll still usually be able to get the H installed for less than a GSR or Type R swap.

Weight numbers that people throw around really vary because of the accessories they leave on or remove. But I'm convincedof roughly the following:
D- 300
B16- 370
B18/20- 390-400
K20- 400
H22- 475
All weight with trans and no accessories other than an alternator.

RE: Engine swaps
And also, as for trans weights:
D-series- ~5lbs lighter than B
B-series- ~5lbs lighter than H/F
I'm not sure of the F22 motors weight. But I assume it is close to a H22, and possibly less. The F22 has iron sleeves, so that makes it a bit heavier, but then it has a SOHC non-VTEC head vs. the H22s DOHC VTEC head.
