y7/y8 minime- burning oil!?
So i just did a y7/y8 minime on my ek coupe and its burning oil... a lot as far as the exhaust smoke can tell me. I replaced every gasket on the car, but i never replaced the rings, HOWEVER the compression test was good, the lowest reading being right around 178psi. i didnt replace valve guides either, however when i was cleaning up everything on the head i didnt notice any place with the valves, could i have missed one? yea its possible, but i dont think its very likely. My question is this- with a good compression test, can the actual oil ring still be bad and leaking enough oil up past the other ring, which holds compression, to be burning enough oil that the exhaust smoke is very white? My honda-guru mechanic thinks so...
my next question is this, when i get it down to where im living now (its 2000 miles away currently, had to leave my baby behind in ohio!), and replace the rings which brand should i use? Topline- $65, JE- $90ish, or Honda OEM- $165! and is honing the cylinders recomended if they are scored up? obviously i didnt notice any scoring when assembling the engine but is a ring is bad, its possible... or should i oversize and bore it out? I just really dont want to take the block back out of the car...
The other thing ive heard was this; my cam gear was 2 teeth off for the first 15 miles i drove the car. Could this have bent a valve? i know 3 teeth will more or less destroy valves but would the y7 pistons clap a valve bad enough to be leaking oil in??
I understand i wont KNOW for sure until i have everything taken apart, i just wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions or thoughts on my situation... I dont wanna take the car apart and find out i need to have it bored because you cant hone a y7 block or some nonsence like that...
THANKS AGAIN!

I stopped reading after white smoke. White smoke = coolant/water. Blue/grey smoke is oil. Black is fuel.
Was a leak down test performed in addition to the compression test? The lowest on the CP test was 178... what were the others?

forreal?... i soooo thought it was the other way around!??!
i replaced the headgasket, IM, EM, TBI, Valve cover and all the little sparkplug rings, Fuel injector rings, and the oil pan with hondobond! i used liquid copper on the headgasket... wtf?! where could this possibly be coming from?! no i didnt have a leak down done... i dont remember the exact numbers... i know they were all around 190 though.. like 189 187 188? i can get the exact numbers later? but what does that matter if its burning antifreeze?
So not happy... i need to figure this out now... could i have attatched a vacuum hose to a coolant hose off of the coolant tube in the back??!
~NEWB!!!!!
edit: sooo the cam being 2 teeth off prolly didnt cause this??

soo after going over everything i've done and read, i think the majority of the smoking was prolly because the cam was off 2 teeth! i still havent gotten ahold of anyone that can look at anything on my car sooo ill see in a day or so hopefully!
