break in
Initially, had the engine running for about 20 minutes drove straight to a mobil station 20kms & switched to mobil 1 5w-30 synthetic.
*Obviously I didnt read the manual-which strictly said dont change the oil during "break-in" period.
I drove gently for the first 1000 kms with some rare bursts.Obivously I didnt take any chances & switched back to honda motor oil in the first service.
Some "experts" say engines "dont break in with synthetics, while mobil & castrol sites classify that as myths and that engines of today dont require a break-in,it was true in the past where engines had square faced piston rings which had to seat" & they specifically mention "you can use synthetics from the very beginning"
Long story short-Am I screwed since i used synthetic in the first 1000km?
I have 5000kms on my car now?
I live in Saudi Arabia, its very hot here upto 40 degrees c. so which synthetic oil grade do you recommend?

RE: break in
man, you may have just screwed yourself. look at it this way. regular oil (Dino oil) doesnt have a very strong film strength, it won't hold to parts very well like synthetic can. This oil not sticking to parts is crucial for a proper break-in. Synthetic has a film strentgh of about 400x that of regular dino oil. so using synthetic wont let your engine properly break in, your rings won't seat right. The car will run fine but the rings will be the first thing in the engine to go bad. You did the right thing when you bought the car by changing the oil in the first couple of miles, gets all the worn in metal shavings out the motor. But if you went with regular motor oil till about 5k-7.5k your motor would be in tip top shape all the time.
