d16z6>all y motors imo. i had yet another y7 toast near every bearing in the bottom end, this makes 4 y motors ive owned do the exact same thing. i want to know how your mechanic got the CAS wired up as the z6 has no provisions for it on the oil pump.

z6 is OBD1 while y8 is OBD2, something to think about if you havent messed around with the ECU at all. And i've heard the z6 intake mani gives better top-end and the y8 gives better midrange (similar to a CAI vs. SRI)

^ Again, the head accounts mostly for that difference. The rest of the components are similar.
