Default Timing question

For some reason my civic 95 DX auto knocks valves on third gear,
When I am picking up speed I hear the valves pinging.
I have set the timing , Shorted the connector on the passenger side, the marks are perfect.
The only thing weird is that the distributor is turned to the maximum settings foward. . I am not sure why my valves are ticking.
I did adjust the valves to correct specs.
Any Hints ?
thanks

set your timing were its sappost to be at. How do you know its the valves ticking maybe its detontion? have you done like a timing belt latly or anywork done to the motor that would make a ticking noise if not done correctly?
