Hey y'all. Been a while but I have a quick question. This weekend I did a head swap on my '96 EX. Process went pretty smooth, but we forgot to mark the timing gear with the belt. We put the new head on and eventually got the timing gear/belt on. The car started fine, but it is definitely out of timing.

We managed to get the timing gear on with the belt by tilting the head. I don't want to do this for several reasons mainly because I have to take the whole darn thing apart again. I thought about trying to get the gear back on without tilting the head. I'm hoping one of you smarter fellas can tell me a simple way to do this? Any ideas?

Sorry I don't have any pics, but I can snap some of the old head. I think I'm gonna play with it and tke it apart unless anyone know someone I can sell it to.

Have the upper timing cover off if it isn't already. Set the crank toTDC1 using the mark on the outer pulley (the single mark, not the group of 3). Check that the marks on the cam line up. If the cam is about 180 degrees out, youare at TDC4 which means you have to goonce around with the crank again.

If it is not in time, take the "whole darn thing" (crank pulley and lower cover) apart and reset the belt. Putting undue stress on the belt during installation will weaken it. I'd almost say buy a new belt and install itgently this time.

 

Use the mark on the crank GEAR, not the crank pulley. Mark on the crank gear should be lined up with the arrow on the oil pump

 

I think he was asking how tocheck it without taking the crank pulley off, because he justswapped outthe head without taking the crank pulley off.

That seems real sketchy to me, he should take it apart and put it back together right with a new belt.
