D15B engine question
#11
There's more like 5 kinds, at least.
VTEC
VTEC-E
3-Stage VTEC
and a couple different non-VTEC versions
You'd think Honda could give different engines different names to alleviate confusion. I guess people outside of the US have telepathy
OP, you can't use 3-stage VTEC without the P2J ECU, which is extremely rare. The automatic transmission ECU is more common and a little easier to find, but if you have a manual transmission, you can pretty much forget about looking for a manual P2J ECU... chances are you'll never find one. And, to make it even more difficult to find, 96-98 ECUs (OBD2a) are different from 99-00 ECUs (OBD2b), leaving you only able to use a 99-00 OBD2b P2J ECU... unless you buy a conversion harness from Phearable.net.
What you can do, however, is use only regular VTEC by using your P2P (D16Y8) ECU. I can't remember which wire on the VTEC solenoid you hook your wiring harness to, but you should be able to tell by driving the car which one is right.

i know swaps all have their quirks but i was refering to wiring, converting, emmisions, inspections, and so on if you live in a state that has strict emmissions and inpsectors and stuff its makes it harder on you to get it legal if you use another engine than what was equipped with the car. like the d15b will take alot more work to get it going the correct way than to drop a d16y8 or y7. and not to mentionthat the d15b is more rare the the d16y8 and y7

I found a D16y8 today and bought it for $500. It has 32,000 miles. Befor i drop it in the car im going to change the water pump, timing belt and the drive belts. Is there anything else i should change or look at before i drop it in?
