Angry "dead spot" in power band

I can't figure out why, but when I accelerate slowly, there's a point where the car just stumbles for a second. It's usually when accelerating from a stop and happens around 35-40 mph in about 2nd gear (auto). The RPM's rise, then suddenly it just stops, but quickly recovers and picks up almost where it left off.

If it were nothing but a simple machine, I'd compare it to a gear turning against another gear that comes across a point where one of the teeth is stripped off, so it stumbles for a sec but quickly gets to the next tooth on the gear.

Any ideas?

Ignition is pretty much new. New ICM, newish plugs, newish wires. Fuel filter replaced within the past 2 years or so. Heck, the engine was replaced 14 months ago with a fresh OEM rebuild.

if your engine just cuts out at that speed, as represented by the rpm gauge dropping and you can feel it in the car, it might be your ecu.

if you were to gun it from a stop to 50 does it still cut out at that speed?
