Default Honda's Most Fuel Efficient Cars

Let me start off by saying that I love Civics, especially the 5th Gen. I do not know much at all about cars to begin with but I have been doing a lot of internet research on Civics and VTEC engines lately. I love the way the 6th gen hatchbacks look and ever since I found out that the VX has a VTEC-E engine, I've wanted one more than anything, to say the least. A VTEC that gets about 50MPG?! that is so awesome to me! But I don't want to buy a car based on limited knowledge. So besides the VTEC-E getting 50MPG, are there any other Honda engines that get that much? Like the 3-stage VTEC or the i-VTEC?? I don't want a hybrid because if they can make a regular engine that gets 50MPG, why get a hybrid?

What about something more modern? If they made fuel efficient hondas in the 80's and 90's, then there should be some made in the 2000's. Not hybrids tho.

i got a 97 DX used for about $3,500 a couple years ago. it runs great and i get about 46mpg on the highway, and 35 in the city. plus the older cars give you more control over everything, whereas the newer ones are all stuffed with computer controlled systems and ****.

I have 97 hatch and never achieved 46 mpg on freeway but I get 35 mpg in combined mileage. I must need a tune up.

manual? i also shift really early and stay around 65mph. i noticed that when i'm going 70+ gas mileage goes down significantly.

Yes, it is manual shift. I had a 97 HX manual and used to get around 40 mpg in combined mileage. When gas was around 4.50 a gallon, I would ease on the gas and get around 45 mpg in combined mileage. My CX is not as fuel efficient as the HX.
