Default I neeed help......

My car recently started overheating and my coolant would be pouring out when i got home.. i finally realized something was wrong after a couple of days so me and my dad looked at it and thought it was the thermostat but... we changed it and realized its the fan that is not turning on.... we wired the fan to the battery to see if itd work and the fan works fine its just not being told to turn on i guesss... anyone know why that would happen .....

The fan is told to turn on by a thermal switch mounted on the thermostat housing. Unplug that switch and jumper between the two pins in the plug on the car end. The fan should now start immediately when you turn the key on. If it doesn't, since you've already checked the fan motor, check the fan fuse and relay in the under-hood fuse box.

If the fan does turn on when you jump the switch but not when the radiator is hot, the switch is bad. You can test-drive with the switch jumped to make sure the car doesn't overheat with the fan running all the time. That will make sure that the switch is really the problem and not something else. If the thermostat is stuck closed or the water flow thru the radiator is severely restricted, the fan normally may not come on, even with the engine overheated.

If you can't get your fan to turn back on automatically, you can always mount a switch for it on you dash. I know people who've had to do this... better that than a blown engine.
