I hope you're only power shifting at the quarter mile track. Clutches and TOB's generally don't last long when using this practice.

There's no need to double clutch.
I find that the 1st gear downshift is FAR smoother and easier with a double clutch manuver. It almost won't go down into 1st without doing it. That's the only gear though, all the other ones don't need to be double clutched at all.

Here comes a dumb question...
Whats double clutching?

Double clutching is pretty much what it sounds like, you push the clutch 2 times. To double clutch you would depress the clutch, switch into neutral, rev the engine trying to rev match, push the clutch again and put the car in whatever gear you are shifting to.

The whole point of it was to get a smooth shift in the old days. They didn't have syncros back in the day, so you had to get it really close because there was nothing there to try to help you.

^ yeah, when you shift into neutral and then let the clutch out it gets the insides of the tranny spinning with the engine so when you shift into a gear the tranny is spinning at the right speed and doesn't have to use the synchros to spin it.

If you're not sure exactly how the inside of a manual transmittion works go on www.howstuffworks.com and look it up. Everything here will make a lot more sence.

Double clutching gets the input shaft spinning the same speed (or near) as the rest of the gears that are connected directly to the differential which is being spun with by the wheels. Aside from using the engine to spin up the input shaft, you could take out the engine from the rest of the equation as you're disconnected from it when you shift.
