Some baseline questions from a newbie
Hi all, I'm new here and I have some initial questions I need answered. I'm in the market for a 99-00 Civic and I could use some help.
1: What things should I look at when getting a 99-00 civic? Any particular options I need to make sure the car has, or any known problems I should keep aware of?
2: I'm used to having to add fueling seperately (ie: electronicly or via injectors) with all the other vehicles I've modified to keep the a/f ratio right (my last vehicle was a dodge ram diesel that produced over 500hp and 1000ft/lbs of torque, so I'm no rooky to hp)... but it seems like with these cars you can make solid gains by just doing exhaust and intake mods... so you can do those alone without leaning out the engine?
3: Is a Civic EX with intake, header, and exhaust going to be able to get out of it's own way? I'm not trying to build a hotrod but I want to get around people and pass them with authority and have a little fun when I drive. I'm used to driving hi-po vehicles so I just can't drive a slow car but I don't want to harm longevity or fuel efficiency... if anything, I'd like to gain some MPG. I would like to stress that I want to produce as much torque as possible, and I know these 4 bangers aren't very good at that.
4: At what point do mods start decreasing fuel mileage?
Thanks ahead of time for all your help.
Chris

I don't know what your expectations are from I/H/E. You will prolly make somewhere in the range of 30HP i believe. Pumping 500HP out of a civic will be quite a challange. You can change the fuel maps if you by a standalone or piggyback ECU, but I/H/E prolly isn't enough modifications to warrant the cost of a new ECU. For what to look for, i would look for what you usually look for. Check the fluid level and condition of the fluid. Check to make sure that the battery, alternator, and starter are all working properly. Voltmeter tests work pretty well for the alternator/charging system test. I went with a buddy of mine to check out an EG hatch and we pretty much just checked the regular stuff, interior, exterior, engine, test drive. Be especially careful to listen to any sounds when you are driving the car. Clutch feel and transmission shifting is also important.
I don't plan on making 500hp with a civic, that would be ridiculous...

Anyways, I bought one... it's a '00 black civic coupe EX. It came with tinted windows, euro tail lights, and aftermarket wheels. Now it just needs some engine work, a system, short shifter...
Ok, so basically, the stock injectors amd computer can supply enough fuel to compensate for I/H/E??? How much FWHP is this car making stock?
Thanks for the info!

I think they're very efficient--Honda engineers them to get the most out of them for the least parasitic loss.
Mines completely unmodified, so I can't give you any numbers on when mods lead to mpg decrease. Sounds like an interesting project. I suspect that with a CAI and exhaust (which may pick up 8-10 hp at higher rpms but will also affect low end torgue) there may be no loss in mpg...except you may drive it like you stole it.
Hmmmmm...I'll look forward to hearing what you find out.
BTW, I have no problem with driving with authority, you just have to remember to keep your momentum up and DON'T TOUCH THE BRAKES!
