That's a different setup than I was thinking of. If you open the box on top of the engine (unsnap the spring clips on the sides) and take the air filter out, can you see the throttle plate through a hole in the bottom of the box?

Yes. The black stuff around the edge of the brass plate on the one on the left is the kind of stuff that makes the gas pedal get stuck. The one on the right looks very clean.

can throttle cables go bad?
i'll double check again when it stops raining over here.

oh and could there be another reason why it's doing that?

have you tried cleaning or relubricating the inside of the rubber sleeve that covers most of the throttle cable? happened to me before and that cleaning solved the problem.

gunk eventually builds up inside this sleeve thereby making it stick.

Most of the dirt will be on the bottom side of the throttle plate where you can't see it.

When the pedal is sticking, get under the hood and push the lever on the side of the throttle body directly. This would rev up the engine without the throttle cable moving. If the lever itself sticks, the problem is in the throttle body. If it works smoothly, the cable is likely the problem.

A new cable is not very expensive-- it might be better to just replace it than keep spending time trying to re-lubricate it.
