Default Intake? Breather?

Im wondering what this little red filter/breather thing is on the valve cover:

what does it do? if it does anything good, should i get one? I dont get how you would put it on. On my engine, there is a little hose coming out of the valve cover in that spot.

The hose goes to the intake...You either cover the hole on the tube and add a breather to the valve cover..It's just air going to your valve cover .. I wouldn't worry about it. People use those breathers because the intake pipe don't have the hole for it of course those CHEAP pipes

Here is an example....my line goes to the intake .

People also have to have them when they turbocharge their cars because that is meant to be a vacuum hose and you don't want boost going into your valve cover. FYI, civic Si 00, air is sucked from the valve cover, not into it. It is there for crankcase ventilation.

Also, I put a filter on it because oil can come through it along with, possibly dirt or any other kind of debris. If that kind of stuff goes into the intake, it's not going to be good inside the engine.

ya id say main reason people use them is with turboed.... they dont want to force air into the motor.LOL

my cheap ebay intake didnt have a tube for mine BUT i just fabed up my own hole into the bottom of the intake tube to kinda hide it and it works good....

or they do it because it gives the engine bay a slightly cleaner look
