Default Aftermarket Tach for 98 DX question

I just bought an aftermarket tach for my 1998 Honda Civic DX. I tried to install if following instructions on here, but I seem to be getting contradictory information. The yellow, red, and black wires are all connected; but I need to find the wire to connect to the green wire on the tach.

In another thread someone said to connect it to the blue wire with grey lines around it near the temp gauge. That didnt work. I've also read here that you can use the blue tach wire on the otherside of the firewall. I would like to avoid drilling through the firewall if at all possible.

I've read that that one can swap the whole DX gauge cluster for an EX gauge cluster and the tach would work in the new cluster. That would suggest to me that there IS already a wire in the dash for the tach.

Could anyone shine any light on this for me?

There is a large grommet that sits in the upper left corner of the fire wall that's directly next to where the OE tach terminal is, a simple slice in the rubber grommet and feed the wire thru and you're good to go. Most car audio shops use grommets like this to run thier cables thru and I can say for sure you'll be okay to run the wire thru that grommet.

Thanks for your replies but I ended up managing to do it without going through the firewall. You don't actually have to go through the firewall. If you take off your gauges there are wire clips connecting to it. Two smaller ones on each side, and two big ones--one dead center, one a little to the left. On my Honda Civic DX, the tach wire is blue with silver rings and it is on the big clip a little to the left.

WARNING: Some places on the net say that use the blue wire with silver rings on the smaller clip on the left. THAT IS WRONG! That wire goes to the airbag (SRS) light, and can be a pain if you cut it.
