Default cooling system mystery

trying to help out my friend and fix up his 97 escort to sell. wierd thing is the car got hot but didnt overheat, so now when you connect the battery (when the car is off) the fan turns on. but as soon as you start it the fan will turn off, but when you turn it off the fan will turn on again. greatly appreciate if anyone would be able to let me know what they think

When the car is getting hot, do you mean the needle is above the half way mark but below the red danger mark? If so, check to see if the fan is running when the needle is above the half way but below the red. If the fan is not running, there may be a problem with the fan switch that is causing the fan to turn on at the wrong time. If the car has been sitting overnight, will the fan still turn on when you put the key in but don't turn the engine on?

The fan is able to run after the car has turned off since if you drive your car and its hot and then you shut it off, its still going to be hot. The fan stays on to cool the engine further. However, I don't think its nornal for the fan to be on every time the key is in Accessory. I would check the fan switch. I would guess that there is a problem in the circuit controlling the fan that makes it turn on every time the key is in. I would check the fan switch and the wiring to the fan and fan switch.
