almost any new car now has variable valve timing, but the only ones with vtec back in he day was honda (to my knowledge)
the newer and more expensive american cars have Displacement on demand that shut off cylinders to help gas mileage

yeah, that cracks me up on the hemi commercials when it says it switches it to a "gas-saving four cylinder" but its still what? 2.6+ liters? not exactly a small four cylinder. good idea though. just funny marketing, makes it sound like a 1.5 or something.

but i sorta agree with you md. we have 2 accords. one has a vtec and the other just the 16 valve engine. and i can tell a difference in the two
