It really depends on the school you are going to. I go to a state school and state schools don't give any financial aid in the first place.
I had a full academic scholarship to the State University of New York, any campus I wanted, NY State Regents scholarship it was called. So state schools DO give scholarships or at least DID. Another route is to establish residency in the state, which now has a 2-3 year "lookback" period but the difference between in-state and out-of-state is tremendous! When I went to Arizona State, the ratio was like 10:1 , out-of-state vs in-state.
Keep your grades up and join **** at school and do civic minded stuff ( not car Civic stuff, goofballs ). Also, maxing out the SAT's or ACT's never hurt as well as taking the National Merit exams too. Get your biography in the Who's Who Among American High School Students. That'll work too. Although, you have to be invited to post your bio.

Good luck to all you guys starting out on your excellent adventures!

congrats! that is one less big *** bill!

my parents went with the florida prepaid college program. when i was born, they started some savings fund and just kept adding to it until it was finally time to go to school. went to FAU..i messed up and wound up on the 5 year program though...so at the end, a semester wasn't covered by the prepaid prog. fortunately i don't think i took quite as many credits per semester as they (fpcp) were considering average, so that helped a little for that extra year.

ironically...i majored in graphic design, wound up working for a business consulting company, and now i'm joining the navy. at least i'll be an officer though, so the degree did wind up doing something for me.
