new comp in the making.....tell me what you think??

I have been watching this thread for several hours, but have not had the time to post. I have never seen so much computer misinformation. The computer as originally described is a fine computer. Buy it and enjoy. It will work fine for gaming and any other use you might find for it. A couple of years ago it would have been a dream machine.

Vista may not be in its prime, but if you're buying a computer now, you'd certainly want it to be able to run it in the future.
I'm still not sre why the OP even wants a new computer at this point, when his current one works fine.
well im moving into my own place this month and i have to leave the one now here with my parents when i go,thats why i need a new one.....and once again im not going to be doing any gaming with this comp.
I guess, I just don't see the point of buying something that is already obsolete. I'm sure he wants it to last for several years. Intel is superior to AMD in terms of multi-core processors and dual channel ram is also the standard these days. IDK what kind of games you can play on the setup that he originally posted. I'm quite sure that it will not even run games like oblivion, rainbow 6 vegas, stalker, fear, etc. My pc consists of core 2 duo, 2gig of dual channel ram and geforce 7900GT and it still struggles with some apps.

Re: Dual channel memory. The important thing is to have your FSB match your memory speed. If you have an 800MHz FSB then you can match that with 1 stick of DDR2 800 or 2 sticks of DDR2 400 in Dual Channel Memory mode. Either way works fine. This Mobo does support Dual Channel.
The ASUS motherboard he is buying is pretty much "cutting edge". If he chooses to upgrade his cpu, add memory, etc. at a later date, he will be able to keep up for a few years. Any of us should be proud to have a "starter" system like this.
I have built up systems with both AMD and Intel. They are both good and have their pluses. The main advantage with AMD is price. It boils down to the old Ford vs. Chevy argument. Buy whichever one you prefer.
I don't see how that comp is obsolete by any means. He already said that he's not gonna game on it so the intergrated 6150 is good enough for XP. If he wants to go for Vista later or game he could just throw in a high end graphic card, upgrade the CPU (That's why I said go for the 4200 or higher)
speaking of vista... I just bought a new laptop today (core duo centrino, 1gig of ram, 15.xxx" widescreen, etc). It came with vista premium edition. I can honestly say that I hate it. I like the way it looks, but it sucks as far as functionality. It almost looke like it was made with an intention of making various settings really hard to adjust. I can't even find a command prompt and "run" function. Also, this POS does not support plug and play for the older devices that I've tried with it. I need special drivers to connect my camera even.
LCD monitors are really cheap nowadays.. you can get a 19-21" for a couple hundred if it's not widescreen. Wide screen monitors are all the rage these days so its pushing the regular ones way down in price... I wouldn't go any less than 19" tho... they're just way too small. Your original PC seems absolutely fine for websurfing and older games or anything else you'll need. Don't touch Vista tho, especially if you get that system, vista is absolute garbage. Dell actually went back to offering XP for systems because people hate vista so much.
Get XP or Ubuntu Linux.

i have a 19in right now and i will never go smaller then that....i just need to see what site carries the best prices on monitors....i really want a 22' but who doesnt...lol
