Default 01 civic auto tranny problem

so i have been having a bit of a issue with my wifes 01 4 door ex automatic.
so to start off one morning we jumped in the car to leave made it about a mile down the road and the car slipped all the way to neutral and would not move. The car would move again if we stopped parked and turned it off and back on it would go back into gear for a few moments then slip back to neutral.

so at this time we had no CELs so i changed the fluid ( replaced with honda fluid ) that did nothing so i assumed the worse and picked up another transmission. After i got the transmission i bought to replace the old one in the car i instantly had a CEL had it checked the only code it threw was "P1706 Open in Transmission Range Switch Circuit" and the car has the exact same symptoms as before so im assuming the transmission was never the problem. Anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like an issue with your neutral safety switch.
