Default '01 Civic LX SRS Light On-- Tricks to Replacing Seatbelt Buckle?

Girlfriend has an '01 LX Auto, which has been throwing an airbag (SRS) light lately. Scan revealed that the driver's side seat belt buckle sensor is down. Dealer says a new buckle is about $200, and they need the VIN to order one, because they vary a lot within the same year/model. Can the microswitch itself be fixed or changed out, rather than replacing the buckle assy?

If I can get a deal on an OEM buckle assy, can I just bolt it on, plug it in, and smile? Or do I need a Honda-specific scanner to clear the SRS code?

Thanks in advance,

Lee

Honda has a lifetime warranty on the seat belt systems. Press the issue at the dealer a little, or try a different dealer.

Thanks mk378-- you're right! It's a little bit of a dance with the service department. They say it's a $95 diagnostic fee, but that's only if it turns out to be something else besides the buckle. In other words, they won't order a new buckle based on my diagnosis, so I have to take the car in twice. Once for them to confirm my diagnosis, then a few days later after they special order the buckle, to put it in for free under warantee. Woo Hoo!!
