Default 1996 Civic CX H/B transmission noise?

I have a 96 Civic CX with 213000km. When pulling away in 1st and 2nd gear there is an annoying "ratchet" sound that increases in speed as the car speeds up. It will continue making this sound until about 60kph or until I turn the radio up!!! If I change up in gear quickly, then I can avoid hearing this noise momentarily but it will start to come back while just cruising along.

Anybody had this same issue with their car? Any advice would be appreciated. Turning up the volume on the radio is not a permanent solution !!

Thanks.

Could be a lot of things (e.g., engine, transmission, clutch, loose exhaust system or heat shields).

Have you checked and replaced the transmission fluid level?

Posting a video of the sound would help.
