I ended up taking the car to a mechanic since i couldn't figure it out. The reason it would die when given gas was because it was losing spark. It turned out that the distributor cap i had put on when i did the tuneup was defective. He replaced the cap and rotor again and it runs great now. Figured id post this in case anyone else has a similar problem in the future.

I wouldn't have guessed distributor cap but it's not unheard of for one to be brand new and defective.

(Of course, as RonJ says, don't guess. Troubleshoot.)
