Default 2001 Civic - need new shocks/struts?

Hello all. This old Civic I got my daughter, it has started making a fairly loud knock/thump from the front suspension (can't tell which side) and the car is doing a good amount of hopping/rolling over bumps at freeway speeds. The Midas shop that did her brakes told her she needs all new shocks AND struts, and quoted her about $850 for parts and labor.

The car has 226k miles, we got it at around 203k miles and at the time I did notice a noise from the front end and I think it has just progressively gotten worse, so its probably due for this maintenance but I wanted to get your opinions on this service. I don't know if they have ever been serviced/replaced, but since we have already replaced a water pump, I am not sure this car is worth spending any more money on. Thoughts?

Thanks!

Just wondering when you replaced the water pump did you change the timing belt and tensioner?? And these cars run along time with love and care put into them. So ya id replace the shocks and struts but i wouldn't pay to have a shop do it. The back shocks are easy. 2 bolts on top and one on the trail arm. Both shocks can be replaced in 40 min. The front stuts are way easy too. If you buy all the things your self it will be alot cheaper then having a shop do it. Good luck on your choice

You can get all 4 assemblies here for less than $300. Not that difficult to install.
2001 - HONDA - CIVIC - 4CYL 1.7L - completestruts

I have had the Unity strut assembly on my 94 civic for about 4 years now with no issues. Lifetime warranty.
