Default 2001 Civic won't start

Hi,
I'm unable to get my 2001 Honda Civic started today. A week back when the ignition was on I turned the key to ignition again a couple of times thinking I had not turned it on (I was on phone and did this absent-mindedly in the parking lot). It made a screeching noise and after couple tries I realized it is already turned on. When I drove the car I noticed the key indicator was blinking but after I turned the ignition off and on it went away and it happened a few times during the one week but there were no problems starting the car. During this weekend the car was on the lot and when I tried to turned the ignition on today it wouldn't start. Initially it made the cranking sound and later on even the sound was off and I could only see all the indicators (engine check, key, maintenance required, fuel check etc) blinking but nothing happens.
Please advise if you can recognize what could be the problem.
