my civic which a 91 civic hatch, the car cant find the first gear it always seems as it always goes in third, it has no problem going into reverse or 5th gear, so right now i cant drive the car because i cant go into the first gear

i have a regular dx motor, i know these cars come with 4 speeds and thats what this one was, but i have put the 5 speed tranny on to the motor but i cant figure out why the car wont go into first gear, i am using the 4 speed shifter and the linkage, is it because of that why my gears are messed up, and if it is what kinda motor can i find the shifter and the linkage to work for this motor and car

 

have you made sure that the pin that connects the shift linkage to the tranny is in properly?i've changed out my tranny when i had a 90hatch and i didnt put the exact pin back in and couldnt put it in proper gear.once i did put the actual pin back in i had no problem.i dont think that having the 4speed linkage should make it not go into gear tho.
