Default 93 civic, with Speedo Problem

Hi, I have a 93 Civic and my speedo is going crazy, bounces back and forth, or will show that I am going faster than I really am. If I hit the instrument cluster with my hand it will move back to the correct speed. I've looked into getting a new cluster but its outrageously expensive here. Unfortunately, its even harder to find a used one around here as well. Even Ebay does not have what I require.

Anyways, my car is a 5 speed Manual transmission with Tach. The only instrument clusters I can find are Automatics without the tach. Can I just buy that cluster and swap out the speedo motor (assembly) or am I forced to find the complete cluster?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Best Regards
Chad

Why does it matter if it is from an automatic? they are the same thing just it will have the gear lights. and you can also take out the gas one and put it in new one, and your lucky that if you hit yours it works. i juat have to drive the whole time till it fixes it self. your's is the cluster. mine is something else... possibly speed sensor. good luck though

It just doesn't appeal to me to see the gear selectors. I'd like it to not be too ghetto If I can swap out the speedo motor I'll go for it.

At first I thought it might be the speed sensor, but the fact it works when I hit it leads me to believe the speedo guage itself is on its way out.

go to www.car-part.com and you will find a speedo cluster. Could be the VSS?

You daont have to swap the speedo motor. well you could, but if you got a new cluster you could just take out either the speedo part of the fuel/temp gauge and put in the one going in the car.

swapping the speedo motor will be kinda difficult, i am also having the same prob...but i need the whole cluster, also for a 5 speed....but if you do the speedo motor swap, i belive you have to modify the odometer but i cant rember for sure....(btw, tampering with odometer is technically illegal)

There are some good FAQ on this site for this problem, step-by-step with pics. Mine does the same thing...I just bought one off Ebay used (whole guage cluster with 88k miles) for 90 bucks. Otherwise you can just replace the speedometer, if that is the problem.
