Default '94 Civic - Steering "play"

'94 Civic hatchback with NO power steering. Seems to have some "play" in steering. Although th wheels turn with the slightest movement of the steering wheel, there's an inch or two in either steering direction before encountering resistance in the steerring system.

Is something in need of repaqlcement, adjustment or is this likely normal?

That appears normal, as long as the most minute movementof the wheel turns the wheels, you are fine.

Try checking the joints under the dash or adjust the rack to pinion underneath the car.
