I'm assuming the engine cranks but it doesn't fire. First it could be the main relay. Turn the key on but do not crank the engine. The "check engine" light should come on for about 2 seconds and go out. While the light is on you should hear the fuel pump under the back seat run and then stop.

Next take one of the spark plug wires off and push a screwdriver in where the spark plug would go then hold it near a metal surface. Have someone crank the engine. Sparks should jump. Be careful to hold only the insulated part of the wire or you will get shocked. It will not kill you but you should be sure there are no small children around to hear you swearing.

Ok if you have sparks, next check the fuel. Disconnect the fuel return hose which goes from the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail to a metal line on the driver's side at the firewall. Direct the hose into a container. Turn the key on but do not crank. Gasoline should come out for a couple of seconds and stop. Do this outside; you're expecting to see gas so be very careful of fire. Repeat this a few times and then look at your sample. Is it clean gas, or does it have water in it? If you don't get anything at all but the fuel pump is running (from the first test), the fuel filter may be clogged up.
