If you're just hearing a click while cranking, I'd check to ensure your battery connections are nice and tight, and clean. Then, I'd start checking relays and fuses. Good luck!

When you hear a click from the starter-- the relays and fuses are OK, the problem is either a bad / run down battery, bad connections of the battery or ground cables, or bad starter.

To differentiate, measure voltage at the starter between the big terminal that goes to the battery and the starter frame ground while someone turns the key trying to start. If the starter clicks but doesn't turn, and the voltage stays up around 12 volts, the starter is bad.

Jump the starter on the car to be absolutely sure it and the battery and large cables work. Jump the terminal for the small wire to battery (+). Beware of course the engine is going to turn, so make sure it's not in gear.

When you're not getting power to the small wire when turning the key-- if it's manual the problem is usually the switch on the clutch pedal, more specifically the little rubber pad that presses the switch. Automatics have a switch on the shift lever that interrupts the circuit unless it is in park or neutral.

Hello,
I'm new to forums so I'm not sure what the procedure is but i will like to give you guys my problem and how I fixed it. My car is a 96' civic sedan manual transmission DX. So basically what happened was that I received a call from my dad and he told me that my car wouldn't start. He said he got out of the car to do some errands and when he went back in to start it, it wouldnt start. No crank, no start. We ended up checking the the battery terminals for corrosion and also checked it to see what the voltage was. That passed so we were in the clear for that check. He then came to the conclusion that the starter was bad but that didn't make sense to me because I hadn't had any problems with it in the past and the fact that it stopped working so abruptly didn't make any sense. He insisted we change it, so we did. Changing the starter did nothing. One thing to note is that the car would run when given a push start. The culprit to my problem ended up being the clutch pedal stop pad. Basically how it works is that this little pad pushes on your clutch pedal switch and allows your car to crank. Because mine was missing the clutch pedal switch would never be pressed so the car wouldn't crank. Bought a replacement at autozone ($7.99) popped that bad boy in and voila, my baby was alive once again. Hope this helps. I also attached a diagram of where the Clutch Pedal Switch is in my car as well as the Clutch Pedal Stop Pad. Also when I went to autozone they didn't have the Clutch Pedal Stop Pad they only had the Break Pedal Pad. They are exactly the same in diameter so they are interchangeable.
