99 civic dx with a problem
just a couple of minutes ago i was sitting at a red light and my engine sounded like the belts wererubbing together... thats not the case i dont think but thats what it sounds like. it only happens when i give the car gas and the ac is off..when i turn the ac on the grinding sound goes away need help asap!
It sounds like the A/C Compressor clutch bearing is going bad, based on your comments.
Check with a local parts house - the actual parts shouldn't run more than $150... I just saw the clutch bearing itself is only like $49.00 - and an entire remanufactured compressor assembly begins at $285. Plus, changing out an A/C clutch bearing isn't too bad. You should only have to remove the serpentine belt and can possibly swap the clutch pack out with it still on the car, depending on how well you can get to it. That way, you don't need to purge/fill the system - unless the compressor seizes, then it's new compressor time. It won't be easy as tight as it is in there (the last one I did was on my Mom's Dodge Dynasty - while still in the car... but there's tons of room in that car).
But if it's too much to tackle, check with a mechanic that has a certified A/C technician. Lots of mechanics will say they can work on A/C, but not all of them are particularly any good at it when something 'abnormal' comes up during the repair.
