Post 99 Honda Civic Auto Drive Shift moving from Park to Reverse problem

Hi All,

My 99 Honda civic LX with Automatic transmission is giving problems when trying to shift the drive from Park to reverse, reverse to park and from reverse to drive after starting the car.

The brake lights work.

The shifting from D4 to D3 to D2 is very smooth, it's only when I need to shift from park position down to reverse that I have to struggle, almost like pull with all the strength. I do have the clutch and the brake pedal pressed.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Sorry a newbie error!
I meant the release button and the brake pedal pressed while trying to shift the gear.

See diagrams. Inspect and test the park pin switch and the shift lock solenoid.

Also inspect the push button mechanism:

Thanks RonJ, for the help with pictures. I'll update post with findings by next weekend.

If nothing seems wrong at the shift handle, you could disconnect the cable from the transmission to be sure it's not something hanging up inside the transmission. The handle should move very easily with the transmission disconnected.
