Default AC problems

I'm sorry if this has been covered time and time again, or if this is in the wrong forum, but I am having a problem with my ac. Its a 2000 Honda Civic with a 4 cylinder engine. It will blow extremely hot air 98% of the time, and once every twenty minutes or so it will blow ice cold for about ten seconds. This leads me to believe that it isn't the refrigerant that is the problem, and maybe it is electrical (a bad switch maybe?).

Does anyone have any ideas? This is my wifes car, and we live in Arizona, so I need to get it fixed quick so she isn't getting overheated this summer. Thanks for any help.

When the A/C does not blow cold, check whether the condenser fan runs and the compressor clutch engages.
