Hello all,

I have a newly acquired belt squeak on my civic. I generally only hear it when I immediately let of the gas it "chirps" and when I try to go past 5500 rpm its constant. Is there a belt that is particularly prone to this or do I need to start digging through it?

There's only three belts that can squeak, alternator, power steering (top one), and a/c. You can rule out the A/c just by turning it off. Do the thumb test on the other two and see if they're tight enough..takes maybe 20 seconds.

I did have an a/c idler pulley go bad that made a high pitch noise which could have been mistaken for a belt squeak, but I would first start with belt tension.

Ok all the belts are good any way to check that A/C pulley?

 

I would just get someone to give it gas to make the noise while you have your ear on that side of the car. You should be able to locate by ear if it's the A/C pulley, alternator, or ps pump. A/C pulley is in the front side of the block, somewhat below the PS pump.

Note, even when the A/c is turned off, the a/c belt still turns, just no load on it.
