Default Block Heater Install on 2000 Civic SE 1.6L

Hello!

I am new here but I have done some searching on the site and can't seem to find any info on engine block heaters. I recently purchased a used 2000 Civic and I need to get a block heater installed as I live in the cold Canadian north... I have also checked all over on the "net" and can't seem to locate any info on what/where/how it is installed either.

What I am wondering is how hard are they to install? I've been told that you must remove the head to put one in! I've also been told that the dealerships put on external pan-mounted heaters as aftermarket items for cars without the factory block heater.

Anybody know any different? Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks!

D

Welcome aboard!

I don't think I've ever heard of a Civic with a block heater. I'm sure someone around here has though, they'll be along to help shortly.

I remeber somebody writing on here that putting a lamp under the oil pan is an instant block heater.

Well I found out a few things about the block heater install on the 1.6L...

#1 There is a plug on the engine block specifically for a block heater to be screwed into.
#2 The plug is cast iron, the block is aluminum.
#3 Corrosion really sucks.

Basically my poor mechanic fought like a bugger to get the plug out but 5 years of previous owner driving in salty conditions coupled with the dissimilar metals issue made that an impossibility. When I went to pick up the car, I see they had about 4 different types of heaters on the bench. They had tried to utilize but each one would not fit for one reason or another - mostly due to lack of clearance and the miniscule engine.

The end result is that I had to go with an external oil pan mounted heater that is strapped to the side of the pan. The heater is about 4" square and comes with metal straps that are held in place by the oil pan bolts. Functional but not exactly the warming of the upper part of the engine that would be ideal. At least the oil will still have great viscosity at low temps.

Oh ya and the shop only billed me for 0.8hrs labor. I think I owe that guy some beers...

In Line Coolant heaters work quite well. Easy to install yourself and they keep the entire block warm.
