The gas smell was probably due to the engine being flooded from many unsuccessful start attempts.

Unfortunately, the fact that the CEL light does not blink a code but instead stays on constantly with the service check connector jumped may point to a problem with your car's ECU (main computer), which could be expensive.

I'm getting the car looked at tomorrow.
