Default catcon problems?

I've recently developed a problem with my cat, I assume; when going up a gradual hill at a constant speed of about 37 mph, my car will suddenly get a boost of power like it burped or something. Could this be a bad cat? If so, can I punch it or take it (them) out without making the pre and post O2 sensors go balistic? As everyone knows, more air, more power! I'd prefer to put staight pipes in and completely do without the cat(s) but I don't want to mess with the computer. Any suggestions? --Ramy
