Default Distributor on 2000 LX Question

I changed the dizzy cap and rotor today on my Civic LX 2000. I had done this plenty of times on other vehicles, so I assumed the rotor would just pull of. Unluckily, the screw ended up straight down, so I didn't see it. I proceeded to try and pull off the rotor, no dice as you know. I saw what looked like the botom of the rotor and proceeded to try and pry it to get it moving. No dice, but what I was actually prying on did move, it was that little cam that is on the shaft under that magnetic thing. Finally after moving the little cam right up against the rotor, I decided to turn over the engine and low and behlod, there is the screw to remove the rotor. I take of the rotor and tap the little cam back on a little, it moves back in place, but it seemed as if the shaft moved as well. I went ahead and put it all back together and the car runs perfectly. My question is, did I hurt anything and can that shaft actually move? What is the other end attached to? Why did the cam move and what keeps it from spinnig around the shaft. Thanks for any help.
