Default Engine making alot of noise?

Hi,
I am new to this forum.
I have a 1999 Honda Civic LX 4dr sedan.
And lately the car has been making a lot of noise.
The higher the rpm goes and the faster the car goes, the more noise it makes.

It's becoming kinda deafening.

There are no other problems other than this.
Car drives well, no start up issue either.

I don't think i can afford to go to honda showroom for repair.
I am looking to get a mechanic from craiglist but at least if i know what the problem is from before hand, than hopefully i will know how much it will cost me.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance

First off, what does the noise sound like?

Second... is there alot of noise when it is running at high speeds? Or is it alot of noise when the RPMs are high? Put it in neutral and check it out, try to isolate if it's road noise, transmission noise, or engine noise.

Have you been checking the oil regularly? Sometimes cars seem like they're getting louder when the engine is dangerously low on oil.

Thanks for the input.

The noise is related to high RPM. When u take my foot off the gas and put it in neutral it goes away.

It should like a generator running and gets louder as RPM is getting higher specially driving up hill.

I was due an oil change so this time i took the car to honda for oil change rather than to walmart. They told me my exhaust is bad and said that after market repair obviously would be a better option as they charge $700 for the part.

Do you guys 2nd what the honda person said?

Now does anyone know what charges am i looking at if i get a mechanic from cralisglist to fix it for me?

thanks.

If they said exhaust, I'd say they're right. My muffler has rusted away and I have the same problem. If it sounds like normal, only louder... or more like a lawnmower (heh), then it's likely that you have either a cracked header or a rusted muffler pipe. Or both.

Do you happen to know what would be the repair cost.
I would be looking for a freelance mechanic who can fix it for me.

thanks.
