Default engine will not accelerate

1988 Civic DX. 1.5L single port fuel injection.

engine starts normal and idles great but when I take off and start accelerating
it is smooth running until engine raises another 500-600 RPM. engine then just runs very rough, sounds like 1 or 2 cylinders are not firing and will not accelerate more.

If I slow back down, engine goes smooth running again.
Check engine light has come on.
Cap and rotor are good.

I need to get the codes pulled? Or?

trying to avoid a diagnostic fee, if possible.

thanx
