Default Heavy shifting+Check Engine P0135

Hey folks-
So just the other day I was driving down the road and a check engine light popped. It scanned as a P0135, a bank 1 sensor 1 O2 sensor. I cleared the code, and it came back instantly. I took it to the shop, and they cleared it, but the same thing happened.
In addition, my car seems to be shifting heavily between first and second gears. The transmission fluid is not low; I just checked it. Is there any way that these two things could be connected?
Thanks!
Alex

Define "shifting heavily"...

Do you mean that when you shift, it seems to bog the engine down a lot more than usual? If so, that's expected. When the CEL is on, the engine goes into a lean burn "limp" mode. You'll have less power and lower fuel economy. With the engine running "weaker", I'd guess you would feel an effect.
