On an '04 Honda Civic LX Sedan, how do you get the check engine light off?

An ON CEL indicates that a sensor has identified a problem and that a CEL trouble code is stored in the car's computer (ECU). You can retrieve the CEL trouble code(s) using a commercially available OBDII scan tool or by bringing your Civic to AutoZone where they will pull the code free of charge. The code will identify a problem with some specific engine or transmission circuit and allow the problem to be troubleshooted and repaired. Once the problems are repaired, the CEL codes can be cleared from the ECU and the CEL will turn OFF.
