As an installer myself, I wanted to add something to maybe help clarify this a wee bit..

Remote start CAN certainly be added to a 5-speed , as verified by another experienced installer above.

I'd also like to second the position that this should be done by a professional. PERIOD.

In order to do it safely, the clutch safety switch must NEVER be "permanently" bypassed. That's just silly. Rather, there is an electronic relay added so that this pedal switch is only bypassed when the remote starter unit _tells_ it be bypassed.

The whole "remote start" function will NOT work until a sequence has first been performed by the driver that proves to the control unit that the car cannot possibly be in-gear.

It usually goes something like this.. and this should clarify that this is an intricate process of checks by the starter unit.

1) you decide you're going to want to remote-start your car after you get out of it.
2) you park the car, pull the e-brake, and you press the button on the remote to start the process.
3) you then remove your key. The car STAYS RUNNING since the remote-start is now in control of your ignition, waiting for you to get out.
4) you EXIT the car.. of COURSE you're not in-gear, cuz you can't safely get out of a moving car with the engine on. This is the logic behind the 'check if the car's in gear" process.
5) you close the door behind you. Key in hand, engine still running under the control of the starter unit.
6) once the door closes. the remote control unit knows you're not in the car any longer, and shuts off the engine.
7) the unit can now safely presume you are not in the car. IF you happen to unlock/open any door while the starter is still in the "safe to remote start"-mode, the unit will cancel the "ok to remote start ' check and you won't be able to remote start it .

It's brilliant.. but you have to have the foresight to know you'll be remote starting it later on.

This is a safety just in case someone gets in and puts the car into gear.
Opening a door, hitting the brake, releasing the e-brake, will all cancel the "Safe to start" test.

The only way to screw a system like this would be to lean in an open window and jam it into gear.

there are no good systems, from my experience, that use a stick-position sensor.. these are flakey at best (some had magnets, rings, mercury switches.. none are safe)

i hope this helps.
