Default No brake lights

My break lights worked fine about five days ago, but when I took my car to be checked out they said that there's some kind of brake relay or switch that needs to be changed or something. According to the guy that took a look at it, it's some sorta spring under the dash when you push the brake pedal down it should move outward or something to trigger the light; he says that it's jammed. If this is the case, why would I need to have it changed if it's just jammed? Your opinions are greatly appreciated.

It's the same concept as the switch on the door of a refrigerator or a car that turns the light on when you open the door. The pedal holds the button of the switch in and keeps the lights off. When you start to move the pedal down the button of the switch should come out and the brake lights come on. The top right picture on Ron's image shows where the switch is located in your car.

You do change the switch as a unit. It doesn't come apart for servicing. Even if you could get it unjammed it would just jam again shortly afterward because it is worn out.
