Default over heating problem??

hello all, and thanks in advance for any help in diagnosing my problem. 93 honda civic 1.5 litre 5 spd. engine seems to only over heat when going up long hill. i put on new water pump cause it was leaking. new timing belt thermostat and filled up rad. when going up hill the temp gauge rises fast and when i turn the heater on full hot the gauge drops down to normal. im thinking the temp sensor??? any help would be appreciated. thanks

i will check for power to fan. if the temp sensor is bad will this cause the fan to not operate?? some more info to add is when i got home after a long drive the rad hose going to the thermastat was cold, meaning the thermastat is not opening.
