Default Speedo Problem

I've got an issue with my '96 civic's speedo. I've read the threads on this but mine's a little different. It is intermittent, sometimes if i tap the cluster it will work but that may be just coincidence. Also I don't get a CEL, the odometer doesn't work when the speedo is not working and the cruise control works all the time, even when the speedo doesn't. Which has me confused because i have a '94 civic and when the speed sensor went out it threw a CEL and the cruise wouldn't work. If anyone has an idea I would greatly appreciate the help. Thanks in advance

Sounds like a bad speedo. There are some successful reports of speedo repair by resoldering the circuit board.

bad speedometer.you can get a head unit off of ebay and replace it - very easy six screws.

had a 96 civic ex sedan and had the same exact thing happen to me and same symptoms.

replaced the head unit with one off of ebay and problem has never came back.
it really is easy to replace six screws and a few plugs is literally like a 10 minute job.

hope this helps
