you might have broken the wire coming out of the transmission
check all the wires and connections on the transmission

The 89 speedometer is mechanical. Check that the cable is all the way into the socket on the transmission and the clip is secure. Then pull the clip off and take the cable out, pull the center part of the cable out of the housing to be sure it is not broken. It should be cut down to a square shape on the end where it goes into the speedometer. If you only pull part of it out and don't find the square end, you need a new cable.

You need to get the key on the drive end fully engaged in the slot in the transmission. If it's not it won't go in all the way. You would not be able to pull it out without removing the clip if it is together properly.
